Week 7: Mobile and Handheld Technologies in Education

Consider the use of mobile technology in your school or workplace. Upload to group blog and present in class.

For my secondary school in Hong Kong:

Over 10 years ago, when I was secondary 1-3, me and classmates were using electronic dictionary for learning English vocabulary and doing assignment during or after class.

Something like this: (the picture is from the internet)

Later, when I was form5, I just use pocket PC and netbook to find information by using internet Wifi during class.

My pocket PC: (picture of my brother's mobile phone and my pocket PC 2003, it still works!)

However, Pocket PC in class will become... Solitarie.. as those were the time not yet web2.0, no wiki, just msn, yahoo, google...

ASUS EEE PC small netbook was so popular when I was secondary 6/7  around 5 years ago: (picture from internet, mine was sold already) those were the day Google and Wikipedia started getting popular! I can find a lot of information of the answer of my assignments and scientific laboratory report!! :P

Actually, I was not allowed to bring expensive item such as mobile phone or computer back to school. I just use it inside my drawer. The Wifi network is for testing purpose for teachers' use only. However, it is not password-protected and I just "hack" into it for my own use anyway.

For my undergraduate study in HKU:

iPhone3G is my gift from dad and mum for entering University for studying computer science! The professor also suggest me to purchase one! I use it to log in HKU portal to check email and class timetable from course website and GOOGLE/WIKI ANYTIME ANYWHER!. I was still using EEE PC for reading lecture notes in class but the screen is too small and later I purchase MacBook:
As I was an engineering student, i need high performance computers for programming jobs. I took the macbook everyday with me for doing project and presentation with classmates.

Also in HKU i sometimes find this: ( Information Kiosks for campus navigation in the main campus, photo from Computer center, HKU)

I ever touched it once with friends. But I find this is not very useful as the campus is too noisy to listen to it. And I found it when I had been very familiar with the campus already!)

Recently when I had class of MITE6023
We can have online distance learning (via webcam of iMac):

(from my iPhone4's screen shot)

Last time when I was late for the lesson:
(via webcam of iPhone4, me was on bus stuck in cross harbor tunnel at 5-6pm!)

(Ricky was in lecture room!)

This is the most memorial experience of me on mobile learning! Although is not very stable for the video/audio/lecture notes sharing. But it is completely a new experience of mine on mobile learning!

Thank you!

Week 5: Teaching in Experimential room

Would you like to teach here? What are the room’s affordances and what are its weaknesses and disadvantages?

I don't really want to teach here.

Weakness:

For learner:

Group discussion for whole class?
Across group?
Presentation?

For teacher:

Difficult to monitor
To know students' pace of learning
To know students' pace of understanding?
To know students' feedback?
Presenting idea?

For technical staff:
Difficult to set up?
Not flexible to move the chair, table and computers.

For budget:

It is of course expensive!

Week 5: About experimental classroom

What do you think of this experimental classroom?

Physically:
For audition :
First, from our classmates, the room kill sound, we cannot voice out the opinion to all people in the room easily.

For vision:
There are too many LCD display screen showing the same slide, pros is we can read the slide everywhere, cons is we cannot find a focus of the classroom. I don't know where should I look at when I often have not useful eye contact with each others. It is weird.

For Smell:
Poor ventilation

For touch:
Crowded

For Space:
Separated, dispersed, isolated each group

For time:
is there any?

Mentally:

For learner:
Learner cant find the focus of the classroom
Learner cannot discuss freely across different groups

For teacher:
Teachers cannot monitor the class easily, need to walk around group by group
Teachers don't know if the student is attentive or not, difficult to know how student catch up with and understand the class.

For technical staff
Difficult to maintain the classroom by many complicated set up, many LCD and computers connected together for switching viewing the screen of many computers in each tables.

Present a potential research topic that would be useful in providing a solution to an educational issue (should be relevant to IT):

Present a potential research topic that would be useful in providing a solution to an educational issue (should be relevant to IT):

I am particular interested in “Technology Integration” as I was engineering student.
I want to focus on “knowledge representation” and “Human computer interaction”.
I think this kind of research is “one suit fit all” for many subjects by using multi-media. For example, using “prezi”, “mind map” these kinds of web applications and iPhone applications can help on presenting idea for many subjects.

In the first place, online web applications with multi-media just help people access the information easily and in a cosy way. Learners have more “dimensions” on receiving information and have more “interaction” with the learning material- the software.
Simple and intuitive design of software - it just enhances the learning-experience with less difficulty. Software is not just about functions it provide but also the User interface design which make user feel easy to adopt to it. It must save a lot of time for teacher and student to pick up the technical skill. For the current user-interface design, there is a lot more space to improve
Virtual social network –in web 2.0, it is not just interactions between human-to-computers but also human-to-human interaction through the computers. It just pulls closed between people by getting ride of distance and time. Like “prezi” , “google doc” with the support of “cloud computing”, we can share the presentation with teammates in quick easily. “Cloud computing” is just the most hottest topic in computer science world today.

Introduce myself

Nice to meet you! Everyone, I am a oil arts worker and also a designer in my undergraduate life for 4 years. It is my great honor to join the MITE group.  Happy to meet you in Information and Technology in Education class in HKU!

As the result of ITE's development, people's interaction become multiple online, such as facebook, MSN, also can online teaching, but these can not satisfy human’s demanding.

Introduction of technology in schools may improve educational practice in some way, such as the way to teaching, to manage, to communication with others.
Using hi-tech makes teaching more multiple, efficiency, we can not only have a discussion face to face, but also online after class, and get different ideas from students and learners from other place.

I have learnt something about IT in education which is very interesting to me. I want to join the IT industry which make our modern education and new life much richer and colorful, so I choose ITE for my further study. Although these courses' theory is abstract for me, I would try my best to work with it.

Introduce Myself and Review of Last Week

Hi everybody! My name is Ricky Kwoonkay Chan, a member of Bullet Group in MITE 6024.  I am also a financial consultant in Prudential.

The reason why I choose this programme is that as I used to teach children languages, what impressed me most was that they were not interested in looking at a blackboard anymore today. So, I will acquire more knowledge about improving the teaching method so that students can learn better.

About last week, I had a presentation work in Class MITE 6023 on Wednesday. Before the class, problems happened. We actually just wanted to record a voice and play it in the class for the presentation. However, the recording didn't work. Then we had to present orally one by one during the class. When making the oral presentation, we clipped a video to play, and worse still, the voice is too low that nobody could hear it clearly. So we had to give up playing video, and explain the meaning of what we wanted to express.

Then I figured out  that even the information technology in teaching and learning can be complex, and sometimes may lead to new trouble. But I think some ways can be done to eliminate the negative influence: first, be well prepared in advance, not only in the presenting part, but also checking the conditions of facilities in the classroom. Second, improve the self-technical learning.

Introduce myself and view on Teaching and learning with IT

Hi everyone,

I am Ted,Ng Yankit, I am not a teacher but a lifelong student. I just finish my undergraduate study on computer science. I hope to combine what I get from computer science into education I believe my computer science literature can contribute much in education with IT.

I alway think education can be interesting. With the help of IT, we can make education more interactive, easy, easy to access, easy to understand.

Creative, intuitive and attractive learning content can promote self-learning for life-long experience.

With the help of Internet, web-based technology, interactive multi-media and computer graphic simulation. Traditional factual information can be much more interesting.
Motivation of learning is the first barrier or learning!

Let me give you some eyes' candies to attract you first! Enjoy!
